The reporting codes of South Africa, SAMREC/SAMVAL, are a vital part of the South African mining regulatory space. These codes govern how mining companies, especially those listed on the JSE, estimate and report their mineral resources, mineral reserves and associated asset values. Young professionals in mining are very likely to have interaction with these codes at some point in their careers, as they grow into senior roles in their respective mining companies. Young professionals may become Competent Persons/Competent Valuators who are required to prepare and sign off the mineral resources, mineral reserves or asset values of the company’s mineral assets, or they could also be involved in the advisory/consulting environment where they would independently estimate or verify these reportable aspects for mining companies.
Young professionals who expose themselves to and aim to understand the reporting codes of South Africa, position themselves for success in taking on and excelling in senior roles in the future. There are also significant similarities between the South African reporting codes and those of other major global mining jurisdictions, such as Australia and Canada, therefore young professionals who seek an understanding of these codes prepare themselves for participating in the global mining space.
We look forward to seeing you the lecture.
